Connections between "Falcon Crest" and Other Productions

(revised 05/15/2023)

Many props from "Falcon Crest" were reused in other productions, which is a usual process in the entertainment industry because not everything is bought specifically for a production. Below are a few striking examples of pieces of furniture and other items for set dressing (in this case tables and desks) that were prominently reused in other shows or came from other shows and were reused on "Falcon Crest".

Coffee Table
(Richard Channing's 3rd House, Tuscany Valley – Bedroom Suite, Sitting Room;
seasons 5 through 7):

In the sitting room of Richard's bedroom suite in his third house in the Tuscany Valley where he lived from seasons 5 through 7, there was a low round coffee table made of Carrara marble near the couch. After he and Maggie moved to their ranch, the table disappeared from "Falcon Crest".

It became available for LORIMAR's "Knots Landing". It became part of the furniture of Greg Sumner's ranch when the living room was refurnished in season 10 after Abby moved in; it was kept there until the show's finale; the screen grab is an example from "Poor Jill" (# 235 <10.16>; original U.S. airdate: 02/23/1989, CBS).

Desk
(Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion Study;
season 1):

For details about Angela's original antique desk in the study of the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion (season 1 only), check the entry in # 001 <1.01> in our Behind the Scenes section. It was not a LORIMAR owned prop, but rented from THE BURBANK STUDIOS (nowadays WARNER BROS. STUDIOS), which was a joint venture of WARNER BROS. and COLUMBIA PICTURES at the time. It is still available from the WARNER BROS. prop department to this day.
Before and after "Falcon Crest", the desk owned by TBS was used in various other productions shot on the lot of THE BURBANK STUDIOS (nowadays WARNER BROS. STUDIOS); the following list is in chronological order:

  • "Police Woman":

    This desk was previously used in the episode "Father to the Man" (# 56 <3.11>; original U.S. airdate: 12/21/1976, NBC), which was filmed at THE BURBANK STUDIOS, too.

  •

  • "Hart to Hart":

    After "Falcon Crest", the desk resurfaced in "Too Close to Hart" (# 088 <4.21>; original U.S. airdate: 05/03/1983, ABC). That series also filmed at THE BURBANK STUDIOS at the time.

Desk
(Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion Study;
seasons 2 through 9):

For details about Angela's iconic French Louis XV style bureau plat in the study of the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion between seasons 2 through 9, check the entry in # 019 <2.01> in our Behind the Scenes section.
As many other LORIMAR / WARNER BROS. props, the very same desk from "Falcon Crest" can be rented from WARNER BROS. by other production companies nowadays. It was used on many other shows:

  • "Knots Landing":

    After "Falcon Crest", LORIMAR furnished Marco Conti's office in Rome / Italy in season 12 of this drama series with the same desk; the episode was entitled "What if?" (# 281 <12.05>; original U.S. airdate: 10/25/1990, CBS).

  •

  • "Dallas":

    Also after "Falcon Crest", LORIMAR used the exact same desk in Carter McKay's Las Vegas office in one of J.R.'s dream scenes in the "Dallas" series finale entitled "Conundrum" (# 356 <13.22 – original count> / <14.22 – DVD count>; original U.S. airdate: 05/03/1991, CBS).

  •

  • "ER":

    In "Ground Zero" of "ER" (# 075 <4.06>; original U.S. airdate: 11/06/1997, NBC), the desk was used in the study of Millicent Carter's mansion.
    Note that the same episode of the medical drama also used the cabinets from the Victorian Mansion foyer (see below).
  •

  • UNIVERSAL Productions (same model):

    The same desk model (but not the very same desk from LORIMAR's prop warehouse) had appeared on TV in a number of UNIVERSAL productions before, including the following shows:
    The three screen captures are just examples of scenes from UNIVERSAL productions that made use of this type of desk.
    Among other shows, the UNIVERSAL owned desk was featured in:

    • "Columbo": three episodes — screen capture 1, for instance

    • "Kojak": one episode

    • "The Bionic Woman": three episodes — screen capture 2, for instance

    • "The Incredible Hulk": two episodes

    • "Knight Rider" (classic series): one episode

    • "Chicago Justice": one episode — screen capture 3, for instance

Desk
(Sharpe Capital Ventures — Michael Sharpe's Secretary;
season 9):

The secretary's desk in the anteroom to Sharpe's office at Sharpe Capital Ventures is a LORIMAR owned prop.
Before "Falcon Crest", it was used in various other productions; the following list is in chronological order:

  • "Dallas":

    The desk was previously seen in "Taste of Success" (# 059 <3.05 – original count> / <4.05 – DVD count>; original U.S. airdate: 11/28/1980, CBS). "Dallas" was produced by LORIMAR, too.

  •

  • "Knots Landing":

    Also prior to "Falcon Crest", the desk was utilized in season 3 of this LORIMAR production in the office of Richard Avery's boss, Andrew Parkhurst; the screen grab is from "Exposé" (# 049 <3.18>; original U.S. airdate: 04/08/1982, CBS).

    This show also used the desk in the office of The Bess Ryker Agency; the screen capture is from "Svengali" (# 057 <4.04>; original U.S. airdate: 10/21/1982, CBS).

    Yet again it was featured in this series in "A New Family" (# 069 <4.16>; original U.S. airdate: 02/03/1983, CBS) as the desk of Abby Cunningham's lawyer, Jim Westmont.

  •

  • "Paper Dolls":

    Also prior to "Falcon Crest", the desk was utilized in Wesley Harper's office at Harper WorldWide. The screen grab is from # 03 (original U.S. airdate: 10/09/1984, ABC).
    The short-lived "Paper Dolls" series, which only ran for one season, was produced by MGM TELEVISION and filmed at what was then MGM STUDIOS (nowadays SONY PICTURES STUDIOS) in Culver City, CA where LORIMAR, at the same time, filmed "Dallas" and "Knots Landing" among other shows. Besides the fact that MGM borrowed "Knots Landing's" Fairgate / MacKenzie home set from LORIMAR for a few scenes in "Paper Dolls", MGM also rented this desk from LORIMAR's prop department, which was stationed on the MGM lot at that time.

Desk
(Smith, Plenn & Hogstedt; # 049 /
Tuscany Valley Hospital; season 3 /
De Bercy Land Development – Gustav Riebmann's Office; season 4 /
Agretti Residence – Den; seasons 5 – 7):

The antique desk that is best remembered from Melissa's den in the Agretti Residence from seasons 5 through 7 (screen grab from # 125) was also used previously in season 3 as a prop in Ms. Smith's office at Smith, Plenn & Hogstedt and in Dr. Michael Ranson's office at the Tuscany Valley Hospital as well as in Gustav Riebmann's office at De Bercy Land Development (compare # 049, 057, 071 and 100 in our Behind the Scenes section).

It was also used by LORIMAR in "Knots Landing" in season 5 in Mack MacKenzie's office; the screen capture is from "Witness" (# 088 <5.13>; original U.S. airdate: 12/22/1983, CBS).

Desk
(Whitewood Industries – Jacqueline Perrault's Office; # 040 /
Riebmann House – Study; # 069 through 071):

The antique desk, which is best known from Jacqueline's office at Whitewood Industries in New York City from # 040 (screen grab 1), resurfaced in the study of the Riebmann House in Buenos Aires / Argentina at the beginning of season 4 (screen capture 2 from # 069); compare # 069 in our Behind the Scenes section.

It was later utilized on LORIMAR's nighttime drama "Berrenger's" where it was part of the furniture in patriarch Simon Berrenger's office in the pilot, "Overture" (# 01; original U.S. airdate: 01/05/1985, NBC). By the way, just like in seasons 1 through 5 of "Falcon Crest", LINDA SPHEERIS was in charge of set decoration for the pilot of "Berrenger's".

Side Table
(Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion Living Room;
seasons 6 through 9):

After the earthquake, the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion was partly refurnished. In particular, the living room was equipped with some elegant Empire style furniture. For details, compare # 130 in the Behind the Scenes section as well as the note about the Empire style sideboard in the Beyond the Show – Props – Set Dressing – Cabinets & Chests section. Among other pieces, two square side tables were placed next to the sofas towards the center of the room in seasons 6 and 7. In seasons 8 and 9, these side tables were placed on the other side between the sofas and the fireplace.

After "Falcon Crest", LORIMAR used one of these side tables in seasons 12 through 14 of "Knots Landing" to furnish the living room in Claudia Whittaker's home at 16969 Seaview Circle; the screen grab is from "In the Dog House" (# 293 <12.17>; original U.S. airdate: 02/14/1991, CBS).
