Embarrassing: The new regime at LORIMAR forgot to invite CHAO-LI CHI to the cast and crew's 200th episode party at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles!

Different footage: The recap features the moment when Ben, at the Queen of the Valley Hospital, overhears that Anna is dying in a long shot (screen grab 2) whereas his reaction in the scene itself in the preceding episode was presented in a close-up (screen capture 1).

Real-life allusions: Besides whodunits by R.D. Young, Richard brings Angela books written by real authors: RAYMOND CHANDLER, DASHIELL HAMMETT and AGATHA CHRISTIE.

Mistake in the opening scene between Angela and Richard in the New Globe penthouse: Richard calls his own newspaper "The San Francisco New Globe" instead of "The New San Francisco Globe".

In addition, there are the following continuity errors in that scene:
Angela turns her head away from Richard (filmed from behind her; screen capture 1), but looks straight at him in the subsequent frame filmed from aross (screen grab 2).
Shortly after, Richard looks at his watch when he tells about his flight to Chicago (screen capture 3). In the subsequent frame filmed from across, however, he looks straight at Angela with his head turned towards her (screen grab 4).
Once again, these are the typical mistakes caused by the particular close-up filming technique — check # 001 (Chase and Maggie at the Gioberti Family Cemetery) for details.

Yoghurt cake is Ben's favorite — exactly as Anna's.

Edited scene: In the scene with Lance and Pilar in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion in the evening, Chao-Li's short conversation with Pilar — he hopes her brother, Gabriel, is feeling better, and she replies that he is — was removed from the final version.

Editing mistake: During the scene with Lance and Pilar in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion living room, Lance moves the wine glass to his mouth, but, in the subsequent frame filmed from across, moves it away while he swallows. The part of the scene when he takes the sip is missing although he obviously drank some wine.

The nightly establishing clip of Chicago was filmed from Olive Park towards North Lake Shore Drive (in northeastern direction). The most distinct skyscraper is the John Hancock Center. The clip is stock footage from a film library.

The filming location for the Chinese restaurant in Chicago where Richard has dinner with Malcolm and dicovers Samantha is the actual Fung Lum Restaurant in Universal City, CA near Universal Studios. Fung Lum was a stylish, big Chinese restaurant active between 1982 and 1998. After being abandoned, the building was demolished in 2014 to make room for a new hotel.

ANA-ALICIA returns as Samantha Ross, Melissa's look-alike. Her portrayal is more than convincing: Samantha has a different tone in her voice, speaks in a different register and has a different body language — all different from the previous Melissa rôle.
This decision was forced by the audience's heavy protests against MICHAEL FILERMAN's decision to remove ANA-ALICIA from the show. Since her original Melissa contract had not been up yet when she was fired, the actress continued to receive payment for the rest of the season due to the pay or play clause in her contract. In addition, she now got a second paycheck for her new Samantha rôle for every episode she appeared in, as the actress told SASCHA KURZ and THOMAS J. PUCHER during an interview. Click here to see a photo of this meeting.
For the first time, in an exclusive 2007 DFCF interview, MICHAEL FILERMAN expressed his apologies to the fans for his mistakes.

Uncredited extra SHIRLEY ANTHONY appears as Dr. Lee Walkling again — this time at the same Chicago restaurant where Richard discovrs Samantha. It seems to be an incredible coincidence that Dr. Walkling, who apparently maintains homes in both Washington, D.C. and Northern California, is just at the same time in Chicago as Richard. Or is this just a case of negligent extras casting?
Compare # 207 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 016.

Samantha is expected by a "client" at 1400 Petticoat Lane in Chicago.

In the restaurant entry, Richard says to Samantha: "Will hope triumph over experience?" It is an obvious allusion to the remark "the triumph of hope over experience" as a literal view of the subject of remarriage by writer SAMUEL JOHNSON in JAMES BOSWELL's "Life of Samuel Johnson" (1791).

During her alleged trip to Greece, Angela is supposed to be staying at the Grand Bretagne Hotel in Athens, a real hotel.

The nightly establishing shot of Chicago — a view over the Chicago River in eastern direction with the Marshall Suloway Bridge in the foreground — is stock footage from a film library.

The interiors of Samantha's Chicago apartment are from the upper floor in a private mansion in Sherman Oaks, CA.

The establishing clip of the Glenbraddoch Corporation headquarters in Chicago — stock footage from a film library — shows the Outer Drive East high-rise on East Randolph Street.

The establishing shot of the park in Chicago where Richard and Samantha meet actually features Central Park in New York, which is given away by the streetlight whose design was specifically conceived for Central Park. The shot shows the (nowadays slightly remodeled) Park Road entrance filmed from Grand Army Plaza towards northeast (screen grab 1). The footage originated while shooting the pilot of "Berrenger's", a short-lived 1985 LORIMAR series about a luxury department store in New York. If you know, you will even recognize the passerby far back in the trench coat — it is "Berrenger's" main cast member SAM WANAMAKER (yellow mark).
The actual scene in the park in Chicago (screen capture 2) is from the park at the Universal City Plaza Building in Universal City, CA.

Mistake: In the scene at the Tuscany Herald, one of the editors (played by uncredited extra ROCKY BEACH) is passing by in the room behind the editorial office, as visible behind Maggie in the close-up. Although a few seconds go by, he is still passing by after the cut to the long shot although, without a doubt, he would have to have left that area already.
Once again, this is the typical mistake caused by the particular close-up filming technique — check # 001 (Chase and Maggie at the Gioberti Family Cemetery) for details.

This episode features a new bedroom set in the Agretti Residence (third screen capture), which is different from the previous one (# 197 — second photo). The new interior set, by the way, is the same as the one used for Emma's bedroom in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion in # 193 (first screen grab) to save on production costs; it just underwent a redecorating and refurnishing process.
LORIMAR's original blueprints of this set and many others are available for DFCF members in the Show – Production Office – Filming Locations – Movie Studios – Interior Sets section.

Mistake: In the scene with Nick and Anna in the Agretti bedroom, Nick's hand cannot be seen anywhere in the part filmed towards him; in the subsequent frame filmed from across, however, his hand touches Anna's face.
Once again, this is the typical mistake caused by the particular close-up filming technique — check # 001 (Chase and Maggie at the Gioberti Family Cemetery) for details.

The armoire in the New Globe penthouse is the same prop as the one used at the beginning of this season in Melissa's bedroom in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion.

Deleted scene: The director's cut of act 3 contained a scene with Ben and Andrea (still played by JUDITH JONES; compare # 203) in the bedroom of the Agretti Residence. They are having tea with Anna, who is in bed, trying to conceal her pain. It is Anna's first meeting with her son's girlfriend. Andrea says she wants to be a doctor. After she leaves, Anna tells a concerned Ben that Andrea will have to get used to seeing ill people if she wants to go into medicine. Just as Nick arrives with a tray, Anna is in heavier pain. Nick takes her in his arms while she moans. Ben is frightened. This scene was removed in post-production.

Early script drafts contained an act 3 scene in which Ben visits Gabriel at the hospital to cheer him up, but almost ends in tears himself because his mother is dying. Gabriel tells him it is okay to cry. This scene was omitted in rewrites.

After the new producers thoroughly avoided any shots of the historic mansion of the Silverado Country Club in Napa, CA since the beginning of this season (compare # 184), a 1986 establishing clip of the building is now reused to establish a scene at the Del Oro; this will also be the case in # 201 through 204. This shot was first used in # 132.

Uncredited extra LENNART JAKELL appears in this episode again as the distinguished Tuscany Valley gentleman — this time at the bar at the Del Oro Spa Restaurant.
Compare # 227 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 016.

The director's cut of this episode contained the following scenes in act 4, which were deleted:
  • In the Agretti Residence kitchen, Nick and Ben are putting the dinner dishes away. Nick tells Ben that Anna's death is getting closer and asks him to be strong for his mother. After that, Ben goes to Anna to say good night to her — for the last time (the scene in the bedroom was kept in the episode's final cut).
  • The segment with Maggie and Tommy kissing in her Del Oro suite initially culminated in a passionate love scene and an affair in the original draft of this episode. Early script drafts contained a scene, in which Maggie, having second thoughts when coming out of the bathroom after lovemaking, throws Tommy (still in bed) out of her room. While filming, this idea was changed to Maggie and Tommy, during kissing, sinking from the couch to the floor and making love. But this segment was removed in post-production, so — fortunately — this not-so-Maggie-like storyline was changed.

Samantha's apartment in San Francisco is in a modern townhouse on Hyde Street.
The establishing shot was filmed during season 2 already.

The interiors of Samantha's apartment featured in this episode and in # 201 through 203 as well as the exterior shot of the jacuzzi in the back yard in # 201 are from a private mansion in Sherman Oaks, CA. It is the same place that was used for Samantha's Chicago apartment. While her apartment Chicago was portrayed by an upper room, the place in San Francicso is filmed downstairs.

Early script drafts contained in the scene that eventually became the episode cliffhanger a file folder Richard provided about Melissa's life. Samantha picks it up from the table when Richard leaves, reading aloud and commenting: "'Melissa Agretti was married to Lance Cumson — twice.' Twice? Really, Melissa." The whole segment was changed in rewrites from a night scene to a day scene with other minor adjustments. While it was originally supposed to be a scene during act 3, it became the episode finale in the end.
The original cliffhanger was a night scene in the New Globe penthouse between Angela and Samantha with "Melissa's" explanation that she had been in Mexico and would reclaim Falcon Crest in court — the scene that finally ended up being used in act 3 of this episode. That scene, however, continued in the director's cut: When Samantha wants to leave, Angela stops her, leans towards her, whispering she must call Lance. She writes his phone number on a paper and gives it to Samantha: "He still loves you. He'll be so happy to see you. Tell him where I am. Tell him I'm in danger. Please, Melissa. Please." Samantha is frightened. It was the writer's idea to close the episode on Samantha's worried expression. In post-production, the final part of the segment was cut though and the scene presented earlier in the current episode.

Season time frame: At the beginning of this episode (identical with the last day of the previous one, i.e. 03/17/1989), Richard moves the Glenbraddoch board meeting to "tomorrow" (Saturday, 03/18/1989). The episode closes on Monday, 03/20/1989.
