The secret of Foster Glenn's horror techniques: He makes toys and other things in Joseph's bedroom move and creates the illusion of a train coming right down the hallway towards Melissa's den.
FRANK POPE, the show's special effects guy, rocked many of the toys and the chair in Joseph's bedroom with the aid of radio control devices. The airplanes flying around were attached to flying poles with monofilament, a transparent high-density plastic line used in the aerospace industry. For the locomotive, a parabolic lens revolved on an elliptical motor; the steam came from the sides of the doors from a copper tube that was inserted in a Freon bottle turned upside-down. The light of the train was produced with a giant floor lamp called a Mighty-Mo.

Early script drafts contained another horror effect at the Agretti Residence in the episode opener: In Melissa's den, the French doors to the patio are suddenly cut off by a set of prison bars descending with a thunk. This idea was dropped before filming.

Again, soul music is played at The Max — this time "Twist and Shout" (exactly as the episode title) in the version performed by THE ISLEY BROTHERS.

Uncredited extra LARRY HUMBURGER appears in another rôle this episode — first, as a patron at The Max dancing with Vickie. For his second appearance in this episode, see below.
Compare # 227 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 078.

DAVID GUST, the tall, black-haired and mustached uncredited extra, who is best known for his rôle as an assistant district attorney (# 091, 092 and 154), but who also plays different characters in the series, is a patron at The Max in this episode. Compare below for his second appearance in this episode.
Compare # 187 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 063.

SHAHRAD VOSSOUGHI (uncredited extra) plays a waiter at The Max again.
Compare # 181 for a list of appearances as an extra throughout the series and # 209 for his speaking rôle as Nick Massoud.

Deleted scene: After her argument with Richard, an act 1 scene finds Liz alone at Candlestick Park, looking out at the centerfield. She is in tears. This scene was removed in post-production.

The license plate number of the tow truck carrying Lance's racecar, a 1982 Ford F-350 Flatbed, is 2G56417. The internal identification code of Silver Towing, the Tuscany Valley based company (fictional entity) owning the truck, is 8726.

The filming location for the quarry in the Tuscany Valley where Lance disposes of his racecar is the Napa Quarry of Syar Industries located east of the Napa Vallejo Highway. It was already used for a different prupose in # 162 (compare there).

The scenes with Lance disposing of his racecar and meeting Shannon for the first time were written and filmed for # 166, but moved to the current episode in post-production.

According to earlier script drafts, the original choice for the name of Shannon Taylor was Sarah.

License plate number of Shannon's blue 1975 MG B Mark III roadster (type ADO76): 106 VLY (old blue California plate with yellow lettering).

The filming location for this first scene with Shannon is on Big Ranch Road outside Napa, CA, just at the corner of Rosewood Lane. The segment opens with the camera facing northeast towards the Maycamas Mountains in the background.

The filming location for the forest clearing where Eric tries to practice his shooting is situated in Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, CA.

Allusion to the movie industry: Eric mentions "Dirty Harry", the CLINT EASTWOOD movies.

Despite LORIMAR's "new wardrobe for new season" policy, this episode, Lance wears the white pullover he already wore in # 103.

Parts of the Falcon Crest vineyards (scene with Lance, Shannon and Angela) are portrayed by the Leonardini Vineyard of Whitehall Lane Winery & Vineyards in St. Helena, CA in this episode. Compare # 163 and 165 in particular for this location.

Oak Knoll Avenue in the Napa Valley, CA is the filming location for the scene with Lance and Shannon on the road. The place where they find Melissa is almost the same one where Terry and Joel stopped their cars in # 077 and where Lance and Terry stopped in # 102 (see there) — just across the street this time.

Mistake: When Maggie and Richard get off the limo in Channing Nevada, their positions as well as the chauffeur's are inconsistent in subsequent frames: In the wide angle shot, Maggie is close to the driver's right while he waits for Richard to get off. After the cut, however, Maggie is much farther away from both men, Richard is already out of the limo, and the driver is about to shut the door.
In the usual process of making a movie or a TV show, scenes are shot at least twice from different angles, which bears the risk of inconsistencies. Compare # 001 (Chase and Maggie at the Gioberti Family Cemetery) for the advantages and disadvantages of this shooting procedure.

Perfect music: The brass band in Channing Nevada plays "As Time Goes by" (PHILLIPS SOUSA version). HOWARD LAKIN, a real music lover, selected this very piece in memory of Richard and Maggie's Casablanca night (compare # 154).

When Maggie picks up Richard in his New Globe office, her hair is pinned-up near the temples. This, however, is no longer the case when they arrive in Channing Nevada, but is pinned-up gain when they return to the office. Did she change her hairdo twice during the drive?

Richard throws his baseball glove to Maggie to give her her engagement ring, which is hidden inside the glove. The baseball glove is a tribute to CLYDE IRA SELBY (1916 – 2006), DAVID's father. For details, see # 155; for another baseball allusion, see # 164.

Inside joke: Maggie says her engagement ring has a gem as big as West Virginia; she is very fond of West Virginia. DAVID SELBY is from West Virginia!

Uncredited extra GARY MOERKE appears as the gray-haired Tuscany Valley gentleman again — first at The Max again; he is in the company of the middle-aged blonde Tuscany Valley socialite played by extra ROBIN BLAKE (see next paragraph for details). For GARY MOERKE's second appearance in this episode, see below.
Compare # 215 for a list of GARY MOERKE's appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 072.

Uncredited extra ROBIN BLAKE participates again as the middle-aged blonde Tuscany Valley socialite — first, as a patron at The Max. For another appearance, see below.
Compare # 222 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 015.

Uncredited extra DOUGLAS MAIDA appears as Dave in this episode again — as usual as a bellboy at the Del Oro.
Compare # 224 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 034.

The filming location for the scene with Angela and Maggie on the bench in a park is in Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, CA.

This scene was originally scripted for # 166 and was moved to the current episode in post-production.

The New Globe foyer can be seen. It is not the MacArthur (formerly Park Plaza Hotel) in L.A., which was used for a scene in # 020, but the foyer of the Biltmore Hotel, as in # 062.

The filming location for the charity fair held by the Tuscany United Charities organization (a fictional entity) is situated near the Napa River Bridge (yellow arrow) in Napa, CA, which was used for various purposes in # 105 and 137 (as the Tuscany River Bridge) as well as in # 156 (a London bridge) and # 164 (as a San Francisco bridge).
The park near the bridge in Napa was redeveloped in the 1990's and partly converted into a parking lot.

Uncredited extra KEVIN G. TRACEY appears as the thick-eyebrowed Tuscany Valley gentleman again, who works as the concierge at the Del Oro. See below for another appearance in this episode.
Compare # 185 for a list of all his appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 001.

JANE WYMAN's picture on her main title card comes from a scene in this episode.

When Emma tries to convince Richard of her surprise for his and Maggie's engagement celebration, she says: "Secret destinations are dancing lessons from god." This is an allusion to a line from American writer KURT VONNEGUT's (1922 – 2007) novel "Cat's Cradle" (published in 1963): "Peculiar travel suggestions are dancing lessons from god." This episode's writer, HOWARD LAKIN, is a book lover and avid reader.

Deleted scene: The director's cut contained a night scene with Emma, Maggie and Richard in his limo on their way to the engagement soirée. Emma hands the blindfolds to Maggie and Richard at the beginning of their drive. This scene was removed in post-production.

Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion veranda set — inconsistency: The front veranda is filmed from the entranceway to the south-east. There is only one section of the wooden banisters between two pillars to be seen to the east; brick banisters (like the ones in front of the main tower) are seen on the southern part of the veranda. The real Villa Miravalle only has wooden banisters all around the veranda.

Uncredited extra LARRY HUMBURGER's second appearance in this episode is as a guest at Maggie and Richard's engagement soirée. For his earlier appearance in this episode, see above.
Compare # 227 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 078.

Compare # 215 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 072.

The shot of Eric in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion living room in this season's main title (right screen capture) is from an unused version of the scene in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion in this episode (compare the left screen grab for the version used this episode).

The blonde woman (uncredited extra) who is best remembered as the Coit Café cash counter lady (# 154) is among the party guests in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion in this episode.
Compare # 195 for a list of appearances throughout the series.

This is the first time the hallway to the kitchen between the foyer and the sun room in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion can be seen with both doors — between the foyer and the sun room — ajar.

Uncredited extra KEVIN TRACEY's second appearance in this episode as the thick-eyebrowed Tuscany Valley gentleman is at Maggie and Richard's engagement soirée. For an earlier appearance in this episode, see above.
Compare # 185 for a list of all his appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 001.

Uncredited extra SHARRI ZAK appears as the gray-haired Tuscany Valley socialite with the pony tail again; this episode as a guest at Richard and Maggie's engagement soirée in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion.
Compare # 202 for biographical details about this rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 009.

For details about the extra, compare # 014.

DAVID GUST, the tall, black-haired and mustached uncredited extra, who is best known for his rôle as an assistant district attorney (# 091, 092 and 154), but who also plays different characters in the series, appears for a second time in this episode — at Maggie and Richard's engagement soirée. Compare above for his first appearance in this episode.
Compare # 187 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 063.

The part of the Falcon Crest grounds where Eric is about to shoot Ambrose is supposed to be somewhere near a small building near the Victorian Mansion. It remains a mystery where exactly that building is supposed to be located though.
The filming location is not at Spring Mountain. It is actually a lawn area behind stage 4 on the backlot of CBS-MTM STUDIOS (now RADFORD STUDIO CENTER).
The location manager originally planned for the cliffhanger to have Eric walk into Ambrose's direction from the Victorian Mansion veranda. A replica of the veranda was supposed to be assembled on Western Street on the CBS-MTM (RADFORD STUDIO CENTER) backlot. These plans were omitted though.

This is the last episode partly filmed on location in Northern California. All future episodes will reuse old clips of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys and San Francisco. New vineyard footage will be filmed occasionally around Santa Clarita, CA, but not on a regular basis.
