The set designers did a very poor job creating a faint painting supposed to resemble the surroundings of the Falcon Crest Guest House. Actually, however, there are less trees in front of the building — and in a much farther distance than in the painting.

Mistake: Shortly before Dan starts to play the piano in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion, he places both his hands on the grand piano. In the subsequent close-up of Maggie, which features Dan in the background however, his hands are on his knees.
This is a mistake caused by the particular close-up filming technique — check # 001 (Chase and Maggie at the Gioberti Family Cemetery) for details.

Dan plays CHOPIN on the piano while Maggie gives birth to her baby.

The filming location for the Tuscany Valley road the ambulance and Chase's Porsche drive along is South Turner Avenue between East Philadelphia Street and California State Route 60 in Ontario, CA. Since this neighborhood was redeveloped into an industrial area since filming, the street has been totally rebuilt.
ROBERT FOXWORTH is replaced by a stunt double in this scene.

The ambulance heading to Falcon Crest is a Dodge Ram.

Shortly after Richard's question if Chase knows anything about delivering babies during the birth scene in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion, Richard tells Maggie to stop pushing. When he looks at her (filmed from behind him), his jaw moves as if he is talking, but there is no audible dialog. Richard's line actually continued: "Breathe. Breathe. That's right..." For no apparent reason, this part of his line was removed in post-production.

While filming the birth scene, a Lamaze instructor was on the set, explaining to SUSAN SULLIVAN how she should breathe when portraying being in labor. The instructor repeatedly told her to breathe, and she became too hectic, starting to hyperventilate and finally faint. She came to again quite quickly, so filming could be resumed, but her fainting is why she looks quite pale and under stress in the final version of the birth scene.

The segment of Maggie's newly born infant is not a scene specifically filmed for the series, but is stock footage of a birth scene.
Aside from the notes about stock footage in various production documents, this is easily recognizable due to the pink towel, which is nowhere to be seen in the actual shots with SUSAN SULLIVAN.

Dan plays "Hail to the Chief", the march primarily associated with the President of the United States, on the piano immediately after the birth of Maggie's baby.

The writing staff originally intended to name Maggie's baby Seth (inside joke: named after ERNIE WALLENGREN's son born that same year), but SUSAN SULLIVAN did not like the name. So HOWARD LAKIN suggested Gavin, which she did not like either. She changed it to Kevin.
Ironically enough, however, in the first scene mentioning her baby's name (with MARGARET LADD in the hospital room), SUSAN still says "Gavin" and explains the meaning of the Welsh name ("field of the hawk"). That scene was never changed after SUSAN had chosen the new name, Kevin.
Kevin means "beautiful at birth".

Deleted and edited scenes: The director's cut contained the following scenes or parts of scenes, which were removed from the final version:
  • At the end of act 1, Angela uses smelling salts to "revive" Mrs. Whitaker in the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion living room. After the secretary sputters awake, Chao-Li asks Angela what to tell her business appointment (scheduled in a few minutes). Considering the chaos after Kevin's birth, Angela dryly replies: "Just tell them we had another earthquake."
  • In Act 2, Chase comes to the Falcon Crest Guest House at night to see Vickie and Dan. He does not understand why they want to live under Angela's roof and suggests that he buy them a house. As this scene was very similar to the later one at the Guest House (including Angela), it was omitted.

The initial choice for the Roland Saunders character was ROBERT MITCHUM. But plans for a special guest appearance of the old Hollywood legend did not materialize, so the rôle went to ROBERT STACK.

The scene with Tony helping Lance in the Agretti Vineyards is filmed on the premises of the former Gutierrez Vineyards in Ontario, CA. This vineyard used to be located west of South Turner Avenue.
The scene in George Buckman's vineyards is also filmed on that property; on the eastern side of South Turner though.
Gutierrez Vineyards were razed to the ground in the early 1990's when the land underwent adaptive reuse, the whole neighborhood being redeveloped into an industrial area.

Three patrol cars are at Buckman's: Sheriff North's car (on the left in screen grab 2 above) is a 1984 Plymouth Gran Fury. The two other cars are 1984 Chevrolet Malibu models with 9C1 police patrol car packages; the identification code of one of them is 6093.

Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion interior set — inconsistency: In the hallway leading from the dining room to the kitchen, there would have to be a French door to the northern veranda behind Mrs. Whitaker and Chao-Li if the set had been built according to the real floor plan of Villa Miravalle.

In his conversation with Vickie and Dan, Chase says there is no kitchen in the Falcon Crest Guest House. When Anna lived there in season 5, she had a kitchen there (compare screen capture from # 100). The cottage was probably renovated after Anna moved out, which may explain the changes in the guest house; also see # 134.

The filming location for the dirt road in the Tuscany Valley (Chase and Gabrielle, just before they drive to the Buckman Vineyards the second time) is the brush located behind stage 4 on the backlot of CBS-MTM STUDIOS (now RADFORD STUDIO CENTER) near the heavily filmed bend (compare # 073).

The bulldozer rented by the Tuscany Land Company for the demolition of structures on Buckman's land is a Trojan 1900.

The filming location for Angela and Roland's picnic is near the lagoon on the backlot of CBS-MTM STUDIOS (now RADFORD STUDIO CENTER), which was used for other purposes in # 089 (details see there in particular), 113, 124, 131, 135 and 144.
LORIMAR's original map of this part of the studio lot is available for DFCF members in the Show – Production Office – Filming Locations – Movie Studios – Exterior Sets section.

DAVID GUST, the tall, black-haired and mustached uncredited extra, who is best known for his rôle as an assistant district attorney (# 091, 092 and 154), but who also plays different characters in the series, is in the Del Oro lobby in this episode.
Compare # 187 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 063.

Uncredited extra DOUGLAS MAIDA appears as Dave in this episode again — first, in his new job as a bellboy in the Del Oro lobby again. For another appearance in this episode, see below.
Compare # 224 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 034.

Inside joke: At the Queen of the Valley Hospital lab, various blood and tissue specimens besides Chase's and Kevin's are visible. As far as legible, they are labeled with the following names, including some of the show's staff and crew members (in the following overview in capital letters with their positions in parentheses):
  • first set:
    • 1 – GREG STRANGIS (supervising producer)
    • 2 – HOWARD LAKIN (this episode's writer and story editor)
    • 3 – TOMMY REBBER (transportation captain)
    • 4 – BOB ENRIETTO (unit production manager)
  • second set:
    • 5 – Chase Gioberti
    • 6 – Baby Gioberti
    • 7 – Ceaser Johmson (probably a typo; the name should probably read Caesar Johnson)
    • 8 – Stan Romig
    • 9 – EDWARD JOHNSON (set costumer)
    • 10 – Glenn Kvalheim
    • 11 – JOHN F. PERRY (producer)
    • 12 – Ames Boysen
    • 13 – Louis Tereda
    • 14 – ERNIE WALLENGREN (supervising producer)

Early script drafts suggested that switching the blood samples be this episode's cliffhanger. The scene order was changed in post-production.

Season time frame:
It must still be January 1987 because Angela announces Vickie and Dan's engagement party will be next month. It will be in February 1987 (see # 149).
Richard's statement that the paternity test for Kevin was supposed to be done four months ago is wrong because the test was originally scheduled much earlier. The test was supposed to take place in the fourteenth week of Maggie's pregnancy, i.e. in August 1986.

Uncredited extra PAUL VAN appears in his usual rôle as the mustached Tuscany Valley doctor again — this time at the International Wine Show at the Del Oro.
Compare # 227 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of all his appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 014.

Different footage: The sneak preview for this episode features a different take of the moment when Gabrielle is just about to start slapping Roland. In particular, his line, "Where I come from, little girls were spanked for telling lies," is presented in the episode itself with Roland being photographed from behind (screen grab 2) whereas he was facing the camera in the sneak preview (screen capture 1). Also, his intonation is slightly different.

Uncredited extra SHIRLEY ANTHONY appears as Dr. Lee Walkling again — this time at the International Wine Show at the Del Oro.
Compare # 207 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 016.

After his earlier appearance in this episode (see above), uncredited extra DOUGLAS MAIDA participates as Dave again — now at his place of work, the Del Oro, again, but apparently off duty at the International Wine Show.
Compare # 224 for biographical details about this minor rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 034.

Uncredited extra PHYLLIS CLAYTON appears as the blonde short-haired Tuscany Valley socialite again — this time at the International Wine Show at the Del Oro.
Compare # 190 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 013.

Uncredited extra SHARRI ZAK appears as the gray-haired Tuscany Valley socialite again; this episode at the International Wine Show at the Del Oro.
Compare # 202 for biographical details about this rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about the extra, compare # 009.

Different footage: The sneak preview for this episode (screen capture 1) of the moment when Peter looks suspiciously at Angela and Roland in the Del Oro lobby is different from the same moment in the episode itself (screen grab 2).
