Tentative title: Chiaroscuro.

This episode was originally assigned to be directed by GWEN ARNER and later re-assigned to JOSEPH MANDUKE.

Mistake: After Vickie's argument with Chase and Maggie, the shadow of another person can be seen on the Gioberti House stairway.

The establishing shot of San Francisco — the Oakland Bay Bridge in foreground, shot from Treasure Island Road (bridge over highway 80) on Yerba Buena Island towards southwest — is stock footage from a film library.

"Macbeth" is played as a benefit for The Bay City Arts Center in San Francisco.

The filming location is the former Huntington Hartford Theatre (nowadays Ricardo Montalbán Theatre) on Vine Street in North Hollywood, CA. When the Ricardo Montalbán Foundation bought the place, it underwent major renovation.

Uncredited stand-in GORDON HODGINS appears as an extra again. Having gotten rid of his faux mustache from his previous regular part as a catering service employee (compare # 001, 004 and 008), he participates as a Tuscany Valley gentleman now, who is a Bay City Arts Center patron; this is a rôle he will play in many other episodes. But he will also portray many different characters in the episodes to come. For his second appearance (as a different character) and his third appearance in this episode, see below.
Compare # 182 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about GORDON HODGINS, compare # 001.

This episode marks the first appearance of uncredited extra SHARRI ZAK. She is an American actress, who appeared as an extra in hundreds of episodes of various series, particulary in the 1980's. As an extra, she was not provided with wardrobe by the studio, but had to bring her own clothes for filming. SHARRI was known for owning an abundance of ball gowns and other elegant clothes, which often helped her be cast as a high society lady in all kinds of TV shows, including "Hart to Hart", (the classic) "Dynasty" and "Scarecrow and Mrs. King", just to name a few. One of her few rôles with an assigned character name, albeit it a non-speaking part, was Sharri, the maid at the Weldon residence, on LORIMAR's "Flamingo Road" where she got in contact with many staff and crew members who later moved over to "Falcon Crest". Until the end of season 8 of "Falcon Crest", she appeared in many episodes as a gray-haired Tuscany Valley socialite, oftentimes with a pony tail. Due to her professionalism, SHARRI ZAK was often given the liberty for direct interaction with the main cast in the background while many other extras were limited to a pure atmospheric presence with limited interaction within the group of extras. Particularly often, SHARRI will be seen talking to JANE WYMAN in the background of scenes.
In this episode, she is a theatre patron at the Bay City Arts Center.
SHARRI ZAK will continue to play the same part in many following episodes. Compare # 202 for biographical details about her rôle and a list of appearances throughout the series.

Before the rôle of Arthur Masefield was developed, the writing staff planned to have a French artist as the portrait painter and Angela's love interest.

A framed poster of the exhibition entitled "Turn-of-the Century America", which took place at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City between June 30 and October 2, 1977, is hanging in the Spring House.

Jason's favorite dish: Chicken Cacciatore.

Mario's college is portrayed by the inner courtyard of the WARNER BROS. Executive Building at THE BURBANK STUDIOS.

The filming location for the games arcade in the Tuscany Valley where Vickie meets Lance was actually located at the corner of Vanowen Street and Whitsett Avenue in North Hollywood, CA. Malibu Grand Prix, the real arcade, was destroyed by arson in 1998.

The establishing shot of San Francisco — a view over the bay with the Oakland Bay Bridge, shot from the Avenue of the Palms on Treasure Island — is stock footage from a film library.

The San Francisco Coffee Shop where Lance and Vickie meet are the real exteriors and interiors of what used to be Lau's Restaurant at the corner of Lankershim Boulevard and Chandler Boulevard in North Hollywood, CA. The building was torn down after extensive remodeling of Lankershim Boulevard for the L.A. Metro subway began in 1994. Lau's Restaurant will be featured again in # 017.

Product placement: Coca Cola signs can be seen near the cash counter in Lau's Restaurant in San Francisco.

Vickie's acting class is at the Side Street Theatre (Players Theatre in early script drafts) in San Francisco.
The filming location is a real theater on Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood, CA — nowadays called the Lankershim Arts Center.

The San Francisco street (Maggie and Chase in the car on their search for Vickie) is actually the section of Tujunga Avenue in North Hollywood. The whole segment was filmed between Chandler Boulevard in the north and Magnolia Boulevard in the south, the car heading south. If you look closely, it is apparent that the same section of the street was filmed multiple times. Through the car's side window behind Maggie, the North Hollywood Park is visible in particular.

New license plate number of Chase and Maggie's Ford LTD Country Squire station wagon: 436 XEB (now a California plate). It is the same number as on the BMW in front of the Falcon Crest Victorian Mansion in # 005 (see there) — not an appropriate way to save production cost.

Early script drafts included a scene during Maggie and Chase's search for Vickie at her high school in the Tuscany Valley — with Vickie's friend Nicole. This idea was dropped in later revisions; the character of Nicole remained unseen, but was occasionally mentioned by Vickie during this season.

The nightly establishing shot of San Francisco — the Oakland Bay Bridge in foreground, shot from Treasure Island Road on Yerba Buena Island towards southwest — is stock footage from a film library.

The interior set of the San Francisco Police Department is the same one as the one of the New York Police Department in # 001 — this time just filmed from the opposite direction.

After his earlier appearance in this episode (see above), uncredited stand-in GORDON HODGINS appears as an extra again — this time as a San Francisco Police Department officer.
Compare # 182 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about GORDON HODGINS, compare # 001.

Shortly after his second appearance in this episode, uncredited stand-in GORDON HODGINS participates as an extra again. Like in his first appearance at the Bay City Arts Center at the beginning of this episode, he is now the Tuscany Valley gentleman again and passes by the Teen Runaway Center in San Francisco.
Compare # 182 for a list of appearances throughout the series.
For details about GORDON HODGINS, compare # 001.

Chase and Maggie look for Vickie at the Teen Runaway Center in San Francisco. This building as well as the stores (street numbers 5061 and 5063) and the porn movie store, Exotic Adult Entertainment (street number 5118), were all located on Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood, CA in real life.

Chase and Maggie stay at the Norman Hotel on Alameda Street in San Francisco under the false name Nelson.
Cable car bells can be heard in the background of the hotel scene. Inconsistency: There is no cable car line in the South of Market district where Alameda is located in real life.

It seems ridiculous that CHAO-LI CHI does not receive on-screen billing as a guest star in the end credits just because he has no lines during his appearance in this episode.
